Easy tips to transform your terrace into a cheerful spot this monsoon

Don’t let the grey weather dampen your spirits. Turn your terrace into a cheerful and colourful spot with our easy makeover ideas.

Colour block with furniture
Colour blocking is one of our favourite tricks, and we suggest you adopt this one for updating your terrace. Throw in a mix of bold, pop coloured furniture or accessories or simply opt for colourful, water-proof cushions. If space is a constraint, then you can just paint the doors, grills and windows an eye-popping shade of neon.

Furnishings
Another way to prep up a dull balcony is by using fabrics with prints and patterns. There are several ways you can do this: Get a colourful nylon carpet and throw cushion covers in complementing tones; invest in curtains for the balcony doors; build a canvas canopy over your seating area or use dhurries and tapestries as wall art.

Umbrellas and hammocks
A standalone umbrella is a great way to add colour and keep elements at bay. Hammocks are fun alternatives to lounge chairs and provide a place to sit without taking up much of the floor space. If in an enclosed space, cosy it up with cushions, quilts and pillows for an ideal spot to relax.

Say it with flowers
There’s nothing like too many plants. Whether you opt for creepers or flowering plants, they will help soften the space. Remember to use a mix of seasonal and exotic plants. Invest in planters that are not only functional but also decorative to elevate the look of your space (see our pick of outdoor planters).

Use glass films
Cover the glass panes on your pergola with colourful glass film for an instant update. Check for films that can also block out UV rays.

To bring in some synergy in your outdoor space, match colours on the cushion covers and dhurries. Select your table top accessories and runners keeping in mind the same rule. This helps bring in visual harmony.
Hammocks are a great investment to make and provide a lounging space that doesn’t occupy the floor. In a covered space, you can prop it up with quilts and cushions for a cosy spot to relax.
Use your furniture for colour blocking. Work with bright colours such as yellows, reds, and blues for added drama.
For a covered outdoor space, protected from the elements, you can opt for a heavy rug. Bring in a pop of colour through printed plastic cups, plates and cutlery.
