Vibrant colours and Art Deco elements come together in this versatile Mumbai home

Glossy floors drenched in sunlight beam up at you as soon as you enter this tastefully done up 3BHK home design in Worli, Mumbai. Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani, Directors and Co-founders of MuseLAB managed to deftly align the space with the personality of the owners – cheerful, welcoming and at the same time relaxed.

The 1,250 sq ft, Art Deco inspired apartment shows how one can work a gamut of colours without being overwhelming. A careful balance is perhaps key as it is here, between the monochromatic walls, colourful flooring and pieces of contemporary furniture.

This languid space is home to a young couple and their son. “The formal living room, TV lounge and dining area form one large integrated space. Loose furniture permits flexibility and allows reconfiguration for both – larger family gatherings and relaxed evenings with friends. It also transforms itself into a large play area for the child,” explains Jasem.

While we are all for bold patterns and bright colours, Huzefa advocates restraint, “Be bold but avoid going overboard with both. Work with customised details, both in the furniture and the lights as these go on to become conversation starters.” Now, that is as good a starting point as any for your next home makeover.

Create a makeshift entryway by building a hanging bookcase. Use it to display your travel finds, thrift shop steals or even your kids’ trophies as a little sneak-peek into your life. Use different coloured flooring to properly demarcate the areas.
A bright, solid coloured yellow sofa dominates the living space. The sleek centre table also doubles up as a storage area. An easy way to increase the sunlight streaming into the house is by using polished floors.
MuseLAB created a dining space in the spacious living room itself by placing a dining table against a blank wall. Again, note the use of different flooring although they are in the same shade. We love the bold brass chandelier suspended right above it.
If your door opens directly in your living room, create a hanging bookshelf to separate the two areas, as is done here. Don’t be afraid to play with two or more colours in a single space. The patterned flooring is balanced by monotone walls.
The kitchen has straight linear lines and shows a great balance of colour – white walls and overhead wooden cabinets balance the deep blue lower cabinets and rust coloured floor.
The child’s room has been kept relatively clutter free, with only a chair and bed as the main pieces of furniture. Pastel cushions are complimented by ombre curtains that match the white and blue flooring. This helps create cohesion with the rest of the space.
Create an interesting bathroom space by using different tiles to make each section stand out. Note how the light is placed near the mirror to maximise the light. Keep the ceiling and floor neutral to prevent an overdose of colours and patterns.
