Simplistic Stay in the Open Jungle - Beautiful Homes

Whether it’s walking through the teak forests of Satpura, drifting on a kayak in Kabini, or sitting quietly on a deck waiting for hornbills to fly past, these stays offer a richer way to be part of the wilderness. Here, nature is not a backdrop—it’s the main story

For travellers who measure their adventures by the sound of bird calls and the thrill of a paw print on a dusty trail, these thoughtfully chosen stays offer a front-row seat to India's untamed landscapes. Each place is rooted in its wilderness and offers a different perspective on nature whether it’s birding, tiger tracking, or simply listening to a forest wake up. Here’s where to head when the wild calls:

1. TIPESHWAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, MAHARASHTRA FOR BESPOKE SAFARIS AND UNTOUCHED WILDERNESS

Where to Stay: Tipai

Tipai sits on the edge of Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Maharashtra’s lesser-known but most rewarding tiger habitats. This small sanctuary, spanning just 148 sq km, has an unusually high density of tigers making sightings likely even on short stays without the jeep traffic found in more famous parks. Tipeshwar’s thriving tiger population is led by Taalaabwali, the dominant matriarch often spotted by the lake she is named after. Currently, she roams with her older daughter Daisy and her latest litter, a rare phenomenon in tiger behaviour. Other key tigers include Archie, known for her boldness and maternal instincts, and Zanjir, the ageing but still dominant male whose reign may soon be challenged by a younger intruder, T4. Beyond tigers, Tipeshwar is home to sloth bears, pangolins, jungle cats, nilgai, and a rich bird population with over 180 species.

An earthy, design-forward bedroom at Tipai Wildlife Reserve, featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling, handcrafted accents, and floor-to-ceiling views of the surrounding forest.

Four rivers meander through the forest, attracting a diversity of flora and fauna. Morning and evening drives, camera trap experiences, birdwatching trails, and nature walks around the buffer zone offer multiple ways to engage with the wild. Meals at Tipai, crafted by Chef Amninder Sandhu and her all-women team, celebrate local produce and traditional slow-cooking methods. Villas, designed by Ariane Thakore Ginwala, are built from rammed earth and stone.

  • Best Time to Visit: November to April, when sightings peak and the forest is most active.
  • Getting There: The closest airport is Nagpur (170 km), with transfers to Tipai available by road. It’s a 4–5 hour drive via National Highway 44. For those coming from Hyderabad, Tipai is around 300 km away and best reached by car. The nearest railheads are Adilabad and Yavatmal, though onward travel from either will require a road transfer.
  • Tariff: From Rs 50,000++ per night

SATPURA TIGER RESERVE, MADHYA PRADESH FOR WALKING SAFARIS AND NIGHT FOREST ADVENTURES

Where to Stay: Reni Pani Jungle Lodge:

Unlike most parks in India, Satpura is one of the few reserves that allows walking safaris, a rare and thrilling way to explore the forest on foot. Reni Pani Jungle Lodge places you right at the gateway to this experience. This part of central India is known for its rugged hills, river systems, and dense teak forests. While tigers are present (and can be spotted on jeep safaris), Satpura is more about experiencing the forest as a whole with sightings of sloth bears, leopards, giant squirrels, wild dogs (dholes), and abundant birdlife. Night safaris offer a completely different look at the forest, with chances to see nocturnal animals rarely visible by day. Cottages and tents, built with local materials, blend into the landscape with bay windows, open showers, and decks designed for quiet wildlife watching between drives. Reni Pani also organises canoe rides, horse safaris in the buffer zones, and village visits. This is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 300 species recorded.

3. BORI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, MADHYA PRADESH FOR OFFBEAT, INTIMATE WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS

Simplistic Stay in the Open Jungle - Beautiful Homes
A pair of minimalist, eco-conscious suites at Bori Safari Lodge in Satpura open out onto tall grasses and wilderness views, blending contemporary comfort with nature.

Where to Stay: Bori Safari Lodge

Tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, various herbivores like chital, sambar, gaur, nilgai and giant squirrels roam freely in this lesser-known landscape. It is home to three tigers, a resident male known as Tarzan, and a charming pair, Heartface and Shankara. The Mallupura Core Zone remains a lesser-known gem for safari-goers and is known for its dense sal forests, rich biodiversity, and quiet, less crowded trails. In this zone, encounters with secretive wildlife, like the tigress Jhali, add to the magic of the experience. Deeper inside the park, Churna, another significant zone, is home to the powerful male tiger Rudra, who rules over a prime territory rich in prey and old teak forests.

Every safari at Bori is accompanied by in-house naturalists who are walking encyclopedias of the wild and often includes a hearty breakfast spread set up in scenic clearings during the ride. The lodge itself mirrors this back-to-the-wild ethos. There are no intercom phones in the rooms; instead, each cottage has a traditional blow horn to call for assistance, reinforcing the feeling of living with the rhythms of the forest rather than over them.

  • Best Time to Visit: November to April
  • Getting There: The lodge is just 15 km from the Bhopal-Nagpur highway. The nearest airports are Bhopal (about 3.5 hours) and Nagpur (about 5 hours).
  • Tariff: From Rs 40,500++ per night

TAMHINI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, MAHARASHTRA FOR FOREST WALKS AND BIRDWATCHING

Where to Stay: 1873 Mulberry Grove

If quiet birdwatching mornings, misty forest walks, and slow living sound like your ideal escape, 1873 Mulberry Grove delivers. Nestled by the Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected biosphere more famous for its rich flora and endemic birds than big cat sightings, this home is for those who prefer their wilderness subtle and slow. Surrounded by indigenous trees and forest corridors, the property sees visits from wild boars, barking deer, and Indian gaurs. Birdwatchers can spot species like the Malabar Whistling Thrush, Indian Paradise Flycatcher, and occasionally the elusive Great Indian Hornbill right from the property. The forest itself is a lush biodiversity hotspot, particularly stunning during the post-monsoon months when waterfalls revive and the landscape turns electric green. Designed with a reuse-and-recycle ethos, Mulberry Grove incorporates salvaged materials and indigenous landscaping, creating a lived-in, welcoming forest home.

Where to Stay: Ira Kabini

Set by the tranquil Kabini backwaters, Ira Kabini is both a private retreat and a prime base for exploring Nagarhole’s thriving wildlife. The backwaters draw herds of elephants, gaur, and deer, particularly during dry months, creating spectacular scenes just beyond the villa's lawns. Nagarhole itself is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is known for its healthy tiger, leopard, and dhole populations. It is renowned for being home to a black panther named Saya. Jeep safaris from nearby lodges and boat safaris on the Kabini River offer excellent chances for spotting big cats, elephants, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds. Ira Kabini is designed to frame uninterrupted views of the backwaters, and provides a unique combination of water-based and land-based wildlife experiences.

6. TADOBA-ANDHARI TIGER RESERVE, MAHARASHTRA FOR THRILLING BIG CAT SAFARIS

Vehicles for Jungle Safari - Beautiful Homes
Safari jeeps lined up against a golden grassland backdrop at Bamboo Safari Lodge in Tadoba, ready for wildlife adventures under a setting sky.

Where to Stay: Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge

Set on the shores of Lake Maasal and flanked by dense bamboo groves, Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge offers front-row access to one of India's most exciting tiger territories—Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. Known for its high tiger density and regular sightings of leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, and gaurs, Tadoba is a favourite among serious wildlife trackers. Tadoba’s wild heart beats strongest through its iconic tigers, and among them, Roma is a standout, a bold young tigress often seen confidently striding along safari tracks, unfazed by vehicles and cameras. Born to famed tigress Choti Tara and dominant male Rudra, Roma and her equally spirited sister Bijlee continue their lineage of strength and resilience. Bijlee, now a mother herself, has even adopted and nurtured her grandmother Choti Tara’s misplaced cub, an incredibly rare behaviour among tigers.

Other legendary names in Tadoba’s living tapestry include Sonam, the fierce guardian of Telia Lake, Chota Matka, the gentle giant, and Chota Dadhiyal, often called the most handsome tiger of the reserve. With expert naturalists leading the way, guests often encounter entire forest dramas unfolding: a tigress with cubs at a waterhole, wild dogs on a hunt, or a sloth bear ambling across the dusty trails. Adding to the experience is the Eco Ranger, India’s first battery-operated luxury safari vehicle offering silent, low-impact safaris that enhance the chances of observing wildlife.

  • Best Time to Visit: March to May for peak tiger sightings; December to February for cooler weather and birdwatching.
  • Getting there: The nearest airport is Nagpur, approximately 100 km away. Direct flights connect it to most major cities in India.
  • Tariff: From Rs 30,000++ per night

7. UMRED KARHANDLA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY FOR A QUIET, SKY-HIGH FOREST ESCAPE

Where to Stay: Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy (BNFC)

Only 58 km from Nagpur, Umred Karhandla has quietly risen as a favourite safari destination, largely thanks to Jai, the legendary male tiger who famously migrated over 130 km from Nagzira to establish his territory here. Today, his descendants continue to roam the forest, alongside Indian leopards, blue bulls, barking deer, wild boar, and sloth bears. Game drives here are intimate, often with few other vehicles in sight, and the sanctuary’s dry deciduous landscape is rich in both mammalian and reptilian life. As of the last census, Umred housed 11 tigers and six leopards, alongside endangered reptiles like the Indian cobra, monitor lizard, and Indian rock python. At BFNC, the emphasis remains on slowing down and watching the forest change through the day. The elevated ‘luxury nests’ offer create a peaceful retreat high above the forest floor.
