If you want to extend your home, balconies are a popular choice. They also help in bringing more light into your living space as well as double up as additional outdoor space
If you are in the process of building your new house or even renovating your existing space, you should spend some time pondering upon the kind of balconies you would want to have in your house. Balconies not only have usability functions but also add supreme aesthetic value to the exterior of your house. Having a medium-sized or a large-sized balcony in your house would provide you with an additional space to enjoy some time with friends and family. YOU can also always use the balcony space to enjoy the weather outside. Once you have decided to have a balcony in your home, there are a host of options you can choose from. Different types of balconies and balcony structures exist in the world that you can choose from. If you are feeling that you are not yet savvy in understanding the different architectures of a balcony and if you feel that you are not ready to make that decision yet, fret not. We have collated a long list of different types of balconies and their uses and we hope that this will help you in identifying the right type of balcony structure for your precious home.
We understand that everyone knows and can visualize what a balcony is. But let’s still formally describe what we are talking about, shall we? A balcony is usually an extension on the upper floors towards the outside of said floors that is enclosed with a railing for safety purposes. The size of this structure known as the balcony depends on the total size of the house. However, even in small houses, the size of the balcony can vary depending on choice and taste. Balconies outside the window panels are typically smaller in size and are attached to the building while the large sized balconies are usually supported with pillars on the lower floors. Let’s look at the types of balconies that are best.
Cantilevered balconies have structures that protrude from the face of the building. These structures do not have any visible support to them but are supported by hidden iron or steel rods or sometimes even girders. This type of balconies are supported by cantilevering the load of the wall, hence the name. Due to such a high level of complexity in the design of these balconies, cantilevered balconies can only be added while the house is being constructed for the first time. The size of these balconies is pretty small due to the reason that as the depth of the balcony increases, its ability to withstand higher loads decreases. Traditionally speaking, cantilever balconies are made up of either steel or concrete. However, the innovation in building materials has produced relatively stronger and may we add, aesthetically better solutions.
As you can guess from what the name suggests, a hung balcony is quite literally hanging on the building. It is fully supported by screws and steel cables so there is no need to worry. Not unlike cantilevered balconies, hung balconies are also categorized under supported balconies. It can also be categorized under box type balcony design. When it comes to constructing supported balconies like hung balconies, a large floor or plate is hung to the building using steel cables at an angle of 45 degrees. Simple really, isn’t it?
Stacked balconies have a fairly simple design. To construct a stacked balcony, one needs to use vertical pillars to connect two or more balconies to form a stack. The vertical pillar approach not only gives a lot of support to individual balconies but also puts minimal load on the structure of the building. In most cases, a balcony is not even a part of the building and is built as a separate structure. By choosing to have a stacked balcony for your house, you may have to compromise on the aesthetics of the building to some extent. On the flip side, these stacked balconies are preferred because of their simplicity and function.
These types of balconies are known by many different names. The most usual name that it goes by is the name Juliet balcony. Unlike other balconies, a false balcony is not an actual balcony where you can put some furniture or take even a few steps. From outside the house, this structure only gives the illusion of a balcony but it is not an actual balcony at all. In some cases, however, depending upon the space there may be enough space added to put some pots with plants in them. These balconies are similar to any other balcony in design because they also have a railing. But they are of no real use except an aesthetic on the outside of a window in apartment complexes.
Usually, all types of balconies are outside the house. However, a mezzanine balcony is built inside the house, thereby giving you an extra corner to sit in. This balcony also allows you to be completely aware of your surroundings. With a mezzanine balcony, you can build a large or a small deck depending on the kind of utility you want with the balcony. A mezzanine balcony design will also have railings for safety reasons.
A Loggia balcony, unlike other balconies, has a roof. A full-fledged roof. How cool is that! In some houses, a loggia balcony may also be built as a protruded structure which is easily visible from the side of the building just like any other type of balcony. The most striking difference, as we highlighted earlier, remains that a loggia balcony is covered from the top unlike most other different types of balcony design. Typically, in a loggia balcony, there is enough space to accommodate some sort of furniture for comfortable seating.
Roof terraces are usually created where an adjoining structure is used to create an outdoor space. This outdoor space is accessible from a bedroom or from a space in the upper floor. A good example would be the flat roof of a ground floor extension, porch, or even a garage. Roof terraces are often existing structures that are being renovated and upgraded and can be fashioned into sort of a balcony. This type of balcony is also called a sloped roof balcony.
So here are the different balcony types that exist and we feel are the best. How can we help, you ask?
