When designing a new house, or your first apartment the living room is undoubtedly top of mind. From optimal use of space, the layout, to size and placements for your furniture, let's explore some suggestions to help you achieve the living room design you desire
As a gathering space and the first impression guests receive of your house, the living room needs to charm visitors and feel like home. Although it’s difficult to say there are any rigidly standard living room dimensions, your living room typically occupies 15% of the floor space of a smaller home, and about 8% of a larger one. Though exact size may vary, understanding the scale and shapes of your furniture and its relationship to the room will always help make the most of your living room dimensions, for a relaxing, functional and appealing space.
Having established that your living room size will depend on your home, let's discuss the standard maximum, average, and minimum living room size to give you a better idea of the typical dimensions. A standard smaller living room is 10 by 12 feet (120 sq.ft), the typical medium sized living room is 14 by 18 feet (252 sq.ft) and the standard for larger living or drawing room size is 20 by 26 feet (520 sq.ft). In general, apartments have smaller living rooms so that the standard size of living room in meters is about 3 by 3.36 meters (10.8 sq.m). Larger homes or open plan apartments will often boast a larger living room; standard size in meters might go as high as 6 by 8 meters (48 sq.m)
If you live in an apartment, your standard living room dimensions are probably 10 feet by 12 feet. This gives you room for a two-seater sofa at one wall and, probably, a television hung on the wall opposite. Living room plans with dimensions like these may use loveseats and movable seating like ottomans or plush stools to better accommodate four to five persons at once.
Bungalows or standalone homes frequently have a standard living room size of 14 by 18 feet, which may accommodate two 3-seater sofas and a few armchairs or ottomans.
Often considered an ideal living room size for entertaining, this comfortably accommodates six to ten people and, with careful seating solutions for the corners of your room, you could have as many as a dozen people over for movie or game night!
For a larger drawing room, standard size can range from about 20 by 26 feet, giving ample room for auxiliary living room furniture such as side tables, an accent chair, bookshelves or even a games table. This lavish drawing room size is frequently found in open concept living spaces, and can include both cushy seating and even a dedicated television or bar space. Add a divider to better demarcate your room and prevent it from appearing empty.
When making your living room plans with dimensions of furniture in mind, allow for circulation paths of 30 to 36 inches around the furniture and easy access to seating areas and exits. Remember to place the seating for easy conversation – the recommended distance is about eight feet (244 cm). For additional tips on optimizing space and furniture arrangement, refer to a detailed living room guide. If your drawing room size in feet is above 520 sq ft, you might need to divide the space into seating groups.
In a drawing room, standard size ceiling height should be at least 9 feet 6 inches ranging to about 11 feet. If the room is going to be air-conditioned or has a false ceiling, the minimum height will be affected so that your drawing room size measured from the top of the floor to the bottom of the AC duct, might have a ceiling height of around 7 feet 8 inches.
While experts suggest placing your TV straight ahead and slightly below your seated eye line, wall-mounted TVs commonly defy that advice, and most viewers are quite comfortable looking slightly upward. Generally, you should place the TV at least 1.5 times the screen's diagonal distance from seating areas, making the living room size key to picking screen size. For example, if your TV is 80 inches diagonally, you should place it 120 inches (or 10 feet) away from viewers, thus making it too large for the standard living room size.
Determine what height, length, and depth of sofa would best fit the proportions of your room. Single sofas typically measure 84 inches long and 38 inches deep, making them an ideal living room size choice for mid-range spaces. A 72-inch sofa might suit a small living room, whilst a bigger L or U-shaped couch or sectional sofa might fit a larger living room size. Use blue painter's tape or masking tape to create a fake footprint of your seating choice on the floor to better determine if it will suit your drawing room size.
