Check out different types of Stairs design which you could make part of your home
Choosing a staircase style that fits right in with the décor of your home can be an overwhelming task. When it comes to staircases, there are plenty of designs you can choose from. Every staircase design lends a unique aesthetic appeal and takes up a different amount of space in your home’s floor plan. This means that when it comes to staircase design, a lot of factors come into play - from your taste, the amount of available space, financial resources available to even the size of your family. Some staircases are just there for a visual appeal, while some are very functional and have space-saving and other practical features. There are dozens of types when it comes to staircases, but we will go through the best variants to ensure that your quest when it comes to home design and including staircases in your house is complete.
As the name suggests, this staircase has no bends in the path and is literally supposed to be straight. A linear path, with no change in direction - either up or down. A straight staircase is one of the most affordable variants out there and is also the most common staircase found in homes. The straight staircase variant has a design that may not need any structural support like beams - it simply needs attachment at the top and bottom. A straight staircase would also give you the flexibility to add (or not add) railings and handrails. If you have toddlers or senior citizens in the family, then going for a railing would be a good idea. A straight staircase can be styled in multiple ways but the real essence is in the minimal, sleek look.
It’s one of the most basic staircase variants and it can be utilized in all sizes and situations. A straight staircase for your living room, though simple and seemingly boring can be given a minimalistic and elegant look. Modern materials like glass and metal railings can make your staircase look like it’s straight outta a movie scene. There are no obvious drawbacks to the straight design except the fact that it may have limited room for stylizing and creativity.
As the name suggests, an L-shaped staircase is a straight staircase with a ben (or a turn, as it is called). This bend can be added at any point of the staircase, either closer to one of the ends or in the middle. It is usually preferred that the bend is in the middle of the staircase. The bend is usually supposed to be a 90 degrees turn and is not supposed to be steep. An L-shaped staircase offers more privacy when it comes to consideration. In case you have a toddler or a senior citizen at home, do opt for railings. An L-shaped staircase is also comparatively safer as the central landing (or turn-space) makes it so that it has fewer treads that one can fall.
The flat landing provides a resting point when ascending and descending. An L-shaped staircase may be located at the corner of a room, or in restricted spaces. There are no structural drawbacks to an L-shaped staircase design, but utilizing and getting one installed depends on the use case you are going for. Getting an L-shaped staircase is relatively costly as it requires a greater skill level to construct and it is installed in segments.
The U-shaped stairs design is a step further than the L-shaped staircase as it has a turn that is 180 degrees. This type of staircase is also known as a half turn stairs. People sometimes also call this a set of switchback stairs. As usual, the flat landing provides a resting point when ascending and descending. Architecturally speaking, U-shaped stairs are easier to fit in a floor plan for a living room. As you may have guessed, U-shaped stairs are even more complex to get built due to the skill required to measure and build these.
This type of staircase is possibly one of the most well-known staircase designs in the world. The spiral staircase design is centered around a pole as the axis around which the staircase ‘spirals’. Spiral staircases are the epitome of minimal and space-saving design. They can fit in any space, and hence are perfect for any kind of housing - from a beach house to an apartment in the city. A spiral staircase can also fit in with any kind of architectural style - rustic, modern, minimalist, boho, industrial - you name it. As you can guess, the spiral staircase draws structural support from the central axis pole and the landings. It has its own drawbacks, however. The use of a spiral staircase requires that you exercise caution while navigating it as the inner portion of each step would require form footing due to its steep nature. It is also not the best staircase if you are going to use the stairs to move things around. When looked at from an aerial view, a perfectly built spiral staircase would form a circle and feel like looking into a tunnel (or a cylinder).
A floating staircase looks exactly as it sounds - foot slabs with no beams for support. Most floating staircases are etched in the wall and hence need to be in a corner of the home. A floating staircase also gives you the choice to have railings or not, and the choice of material. You can make this one wooden or metallic or even plastic depending on your house vibe and house décor. A floating staircase can also have a straight or a spiral shape. They can mostly fit well with the industrial architectural style and would look particularly stunning with wooden planks surrounded by contemporary glass paneling on one side and a wall on the other. A floating staircase is one of the most stunning pieces of architecture you can add to your home.
