The goal when designing a dining room is that it looks great, is wonderfully comfortable for daily use, and gorgeously inviting to guests as well… but it’s surprisingly easy to make simple errors that can totally ruin this pretty picture. Never fear, though; to help you avoid them while making your design decisions, we’re covering the basics here!
From the perspective of home interior design and day-to-day living, there’s no doubt that the dining room is a key area in any home. Used for everything from daily family meal-times, to food prep, agonising over homework sessions, quick video conferences, and of course, dinner parties and casual get-togethers; your dining area design must reflect the myriad uses the space will have.
But given that when designing a dining room you need to take all these things into account, it’s easy to make poor decisions and small planning errors that can have a big impact on the usability of your dining room design.
Knowing what they are can help you side-step having these flaws; so here are some common mistakes that you can easily avoid while designing your dining room.
The first step to consider when designing your living room is obviously the room's layout. The size and shape of the space, the number of windows and the natural light they permit into the room, the other rooms that are adjacent to your living room each of these factors will play a part in the overall look, feel and usability of the room.
To avoid having a hodge-podge room that’s a mismatch from the rest of the house:
This is actually the most crucial and key step in not just dining room interior design, but all interior design. Before you get started, always plan out your mood board; this should be a collection of design inspirations, fabric swatches, the colour palette and even the furniture style you’re going for, and is the best way to avoid having a mismatched and disjointed décor scheme.
As mentioned above, flow between rooms within your home is very important. Even if you have partition designs between living / dining spaces, moving from one space to the next should still maintain a sense of symmetry and cohesion.
Picking out your main colours for dining room walls and other interiors should be one of your first steps. Paint, wallpaper or wainscotting decisions should be planned out and included in your customised dining room mood board.
Room layout will affect how and where you place your furniture. For example, to plot around a dining room wash basin area, design plans need to consider avoiding water damage, including a towel rack, and such details. Mapping out your furniture with masking tape on the floor can avoid having to repeatedly change the layout or discovering some pieces don’t work in the places you had originally planned for them.
If you have any interest in interior design, there’s no need for us to tell you how crucial the lighting and lighting design is to any room. It can truly make or break a space, and this can be even more so in rooms – such as the dining room – that have a strong utilitarian purpose, but are also a key place for entertainment and relaxation.
To make sure your dining room illumination is up to the mark:
It’s quite rare not to have any windows in a dining room, and of course, windows are usually the main source of natural, ambient light. When designing a dining room take into account how the natural light changes throughout the day and plan your lighting around it; dining rooms are used a lot in the evenings / night and you will have to compensate for the lack of natural light at those times in your ambient lighting plans.
While having a dim room where it’s hard to see what you're eating is obviously not the way to go, an overly bright dining room is equally unpleasant. Make sure the lighting is at a comfortable level for any purpose. Dimmer switches could also be a good idea if you like atmospheric lighting.
As a following point to the brightness level, having your light fixtures at sensible heights should be a priority in your dining area design plan. You don’t want to have glare in your eyes while eating, or bump into hanging pendant lamps every time you reach forward to serve yourself a dish.
Remember that your light fittings are also a part of your dining room décor and should not only match the space, but even enhance the rest of your décor style.
There’s no need to mention how vital your choice in furniture will be for the final outcome of your dining room design. Finding a dining set that perfectly matches the picture in your mind might be a tough ask, but choosing one that you’ll be happy with is very possible with the right know-how. Plus, while picking that ideal dining set is obviously the main decision that needs to be made, it’s not the only one!
To create a space that everybody wants to gather in:
We cannot emphasise enough how important this is! While some furniture trends may focus on aesthetics over comfort, this honestly makes the top of the list of bad dining room ideas. Enjoying a good meal just doesn’t work if your seating is too hard, at an awkward height, or simply uncomfortable to you.
Your dining table design should be sized to match the available space in your dining room. An over-large table will impact traffic flow in the room and reduce the usability of the space. If you like to entertain and so want a larger table for that, consider choosing an extendable or convertible dining table that won’t be in the way on a day-to-day basis.
While being a size match for the space is necessary, remember that your dining set is essentially the centrepiece of your dining room design, and as such should match your lifestyle, aesthetic sense, and personality too! For more detailed tips on selecting the perfect dining set, you can consult a dining room guide that covers various styles and materials to help you find the best match.
Don’t make storage an afterthought in your dining room. Look for pieces, such as a dining room crockery unit design, that complement your dining set, and take into account the cutlery, glassware and crockery that will need to be stored for easy access in your dining room.
As they say, the devil’s in the details, and forgetting your finishing touches while doing your planning, is an absolute no-no. Curtains, carpets, table dressings and knick-knacks are all important elements that will help round out, and add depth and extra interest to your décor scheme.
To craft a space that’s perfect in every little aspect:
While there is of course a place and time for this style of arrangement, nothing looks more ordinary and lacking in warmth than perfectly aligned to the same level, gallery style displays of wall art. To add visual interest to your dining room wall décor, arrange your pieces in a more checkered, free-form style. Essentially, crafting a montage of your mirrors, photographs, painting, wall hanging, what-have-you, will bring more movement to the space.
While your curtains should match your furniture style and the overall colour palette of your dining room décor, it’s best to avoid creating a flat patch of a single solid colour. You can do this by playing with tone and shade, but also by having a double layer of drapes in differing length and fabric.
While having rugs and carpets in the dining room isn’t often one of the dining room ideas we put a lot of thought into, maybe it’s time we did! Alternatively, if your lifestyle doesn’t really lend itself to this, choosing attractive flooring that suits your overall décor scheme, is a good alternative for creating a room that looks complete.
Many of us like to display candles, fresh flowers, cute knick-knacks or more practical dining table decoration items (such as a wicker cornucopia or ceramic cutlery stand). If this is your style, then remember that in interior design, it's best not to get too matchy-matchy or overly symmetrical for daily displays, as this can give the room a less homey, colder vibe that can feel very unwelcoming.
