Here are steps to maintain a clean Pooja room
Looking for hacks to clean the idols, diyas, bells, and clothes in your pooja room? This guide shares time-tested cleaning hacks that you must try today!
The Pooja room is the centre of positive energy in the house. The aroma of dhoop, the burning diya, the scent of flowers, and the sound of bells make one feel anchored and at peace. But ensuring this area stays clean and free of negative vibrations is no easy task. It takes a lot of effort to remove the soot from oil lamps, spilt ghee, dried flowers, and the ash of incense sticks from your pooja items. Learn how to keep your pooja room clean and sparkling with these 8 simple steps.
The most commonly found pooja items are made of brass. Like diyas, idols, bells, and even pooja vessels. Cleaning them with soap requires an unreasonable amount of scrubbing. Here are 5 unique, quickfire ways for cleaning your brass pooja items instantly-
Squeeze toothpaste on a brush or the brassware item and scrub it for a minute. Wash it with water once done.
Not sure how to clean brass vessels using flour. Try this pooja cleaning tip! Add white vinegar, salt, and lemon juice to flour and mix them well. Apply the homemade pooja item cleaning powder to the brass item with a brush and clean it with running water.
Wondering how to clean God idols at home? Simply mix baking soda with juice from half a lemon and scrub the idol with it.
This economical home hack involves tamarind and salt. Soak tamarind in warm water and mix until you get a pulp-like consistency. Sprinkle salt on your brass pooja item, pour the tamarind on it, and scrub. Wash the item with water once done and keep the cleaning items aside.
Use this method for cleaning pooja vessels easily. Found in stores across India, Pitambari is a pooja item cleaning powder. It is very easy to use and gives a lasting shine to your pooja vessels. Cleaning agents in the powder removes oiliness and other stains easily. Simply pour the powder for cleaning brass pooja items, while using a metal scrub.
Pooja thaali, plates, diyas, and idols are often made of silver and can get tarnished very easily. Moreover, silverware pooja items are not as easy to clean up. You cannot use metal scrubs and soap or simply wash them with water. Here are two proven methods that will show you how to clean silver pooja items at home-
Wondering how to clean silver idols at home? The process is not as complex as you might think. Take a hollow glass bowl and cover it with an aluminium foil, ensuring that the shinier surface is facing towards the top. Add 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 tablespoon salt, and pour hot water into the bowl. Place your silverware items in the mixture and cover them using the aluminium foil. Remove the pieces after 10-15 minutes, use a microfibre cloth to clean the pieces, wash them with water, and wipe the silver using another microfibre cloth.
If your silverware is badly tarnished, you can make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the pooja items using the back of a spoon. Scrub off the paste with a microfibre cloth, then wash and dry the clean pooja items using the same cloth.
Copper pooja items easily blacken if not cleaned properly and regularly. Use any of these two methods to learn how to clean petal murtis and items perfectly-
Not sure how to clean petal murtis and items using tamarind? Try this pooja cleaning tip right away! Mix some tamarind in warm water. When the paste is ready, rub it on the copper pooja item. You can either do this with your hand or using coconut husk. Once done, rinse and clean the piece before putting it out to dry, and set the cleaning items aside.
Use this cleaning hack if the copper item is covered in black spots. For cleaning pooja vessels easily, dab vinegar or lemon on the piece with a sponge and sprinkle some salt on it. Slowly move the scrub (do not use a metal scrub) in circular motions over the copper piece without putting too much pressure. When you’re satisfied with the lustre, rinse and dry the clean pooja item.
Most temples are made of marble or wood and need to be cleaned regularly. If you allow the oil stains and the soot from diyas and agarbattis to linger, you might have to replace your mandir sooner than expected.
Here’s how you can clean the marble temple or the wooden temple, take a bowl of water, some liquid soap, and a scrub. Add the soap to the water, dip the scrub in the bowl, and wipe the mandir with it. If you’re wondering how to clean jali doors, simply pick up and use an old brush! Once done, take a dry microfiber cloth and glaze it over your mandir. Doing this twice a week will ensure that your pooja ghar stays clean and just as inviting!
Cleaning the pooja room is an easy task. You should cleanse the pooja room just like any other part of your house. Use a broom to clear the dust and burnt matchsticks off the floor. If you don’t want to use the same broom as the rest of the house, get a separate small broom for the pooja room. Then, use water to mop the floor clean.
To keep the walls of your pooja room from staining, use a scrub dipped in soap water and wipe it with a dry cloth afterwards. Do this at least once every fortnight. You can also consider repainting the walls once every few years to keep the room looking new.
Pooja clothes are often light-coloured and hence, difficult to clean. You cannot put the whites in the washing machine or simply soak them in detergent. It won’t do the job. Thankfully, there’s one trick you can use to remove even the most stubborn stains from your pooja clothes.
Pour some water into a steel container and add two to three tablespoons of ala to it. Soak the clothes in the container and keep them boiling for 15-20 minutes. Make sure to stir the solution occasionally. Afterwards, remove the clothes and soak them in cold water. As the last step, wash the clothes with your hands before hanging them out to dry!
Alongside idols, bells, and diyas, every mandir is adorned with pictures of deities fitted in intricate frames. And cleaning them is just as easy as cleaning a regular utensil.
All you have to do is spray some water onto the frame and clean it using a cloth once or twice every week. Use soap only if there are oil or agarbatti stains on the pictures.
If you are a staunch devotee, your pooja room is likely brimming with boxes of kapoor, kumkum and haldi, havana samagri, dry wood, agarbatti, and bottles of ghee, oil, and Ganga jal. You will also have offerings and prasad sitting in your temple.
To declutter your pooja room, create separate storage spaces for the things you use on a daily basis and the things you don’t. Also, it is advisable to do pooja room organisation once every couple of weeks to help you keep it decluttered and inviting.
