Caravane by Nilaya: A journey through the Silk Route

The best kind of design always does more than just fill a room, it tells stories. And that is exactly what makes the gorgeousness of the ‘Caravane’ wallpaper collection by Nilaya so appealing. The tales it will bring up, ancient narratives in new clothing.

The latest offering by Asian Paints’ luxury furnishings brand Nilaya has been conceptualised and designed by award-winning interior designer Pavitra Rajaram. She is a consummate narrator, who has brought her unique sensibility to many products in the Indian design landscape, and more recently to the retail world, as Creative Director of Nilaya Anthology, which is also part of the Asian Paints stable.

Pavitra’s moodboard for Caravane was inspired by the historical Silk Route and celebrates centuries of cultural exchanges that connected East Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. More than being just a trade route, this transcontinental corridor also became a channel for cultural osmosis. The effect was centuries of adapting and blending between vastly different artistic influences, colours, textiles, and design traditions. Caravane traces and explores those interconnected design paths and reimagines heritage imagery for modern living. Think Turkish silks, Persian weaves, Indian woodblock prints and intricate Chinese botanicals. The collection features eight distinct prints and motifs, each with a different history and provenance. 

Persia Songbird combines the elegance of Persian textiles with delicate East Asia-inspired chinoiserie details. The singing nightingale or songbird—a timeless symbol of hope, beauty and freedom in Persian culture—is nestled amidst lush foliage that is reminiscent of Persian gardens. 

Gyasar Brocade pays tribute to India's rich brocade weaving traditions, especially those associated with regions such as Banaras and Ladakh. It is inspired by luxurious fabrics that were once reserved for royalty and aristocrats.

Khiva Raindrop celebrates the beauty of ikat, one of the oldest textile patterning techniques in the world. The design features playful raindrop motifs, which give an illusion of movement to the walls whilst showing off the warp-dyed patterns of traditional ikat.

Coromandel Garden draws from the legacy of Indian chintz, a textile that travelled along the Silk Road, carrying stories of craftsmanship to the world. The design is offered in different colourways like turmeric, indigo and hibiscus pink.

Fergana Poppy reinterprets the iconic Mughal poppy motif that is resplendent in a lot of traditional embroidery. This floral motif is a recurring botanical element in textiles, rugs, paintings and even architectural ornamentation through centuries. Available in terracotta, sandalwood and nutmeg, Fergana Poppy celebrates the enduring legacy of this classic motif.

Agra Iris draws inspiration from block-printed textiles that were once used on Mughal tents and drapes. The pattern reflects a time when textiles were more than just decoration—they were a symbol of status and shaped the atmosphere of the space. Agra Iris reinterprets this floral print in a soft, calm colour palette.
