It's 2025, and a new year of exploring India's art and design scene begins. From established galleries, exhibitions and newer design events, there's plenty to add to your calendar for the coming months. Here's a roundup of what’s happening from January to June 2025, so you can plan your time accordingly.

January 2025

Once Upon a Time in Bombay

Dates: January 9 - January 12, 2025
Location: DAG1, Taj Mahal Palace, Colaba, Mumbai
Overview: This exhibition explores Bombay's transformation from seven islands to a bustling metropolis. Mumbai Gallery Weekend

Overview: A vibrant celebration of Mumbai’s thriving art scene, this four-day event brings together leading art galleries for exhibitions, talks, performances, and more. It offers a platform for emerging and established artists to engage with audiences, fostering connections within the art community.

Architecture & Design Film Festival (ADFF)

Dates: January 10 – January 12, 2025

Location: NCPA, Mumbai

Overview: The South Asian debut of this renowned festival showcases films at the intersection of architecture, design, and storytelling. Featuring curated screenings and talks, the event explores how these disciplines shape cultural narratives, offering a unique perspective through the cinematic lens. ADFF:STIR Mumbai is presented by STIR alongside Kyle Bergman, Director and Founder, ADFF, and in the company of Martino Stierli, Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Making and Wonder, Curated by Kaiwan Mehta

Dates: January 10 - February 9, 2025
Location: 47-A, Mumbai
Overview: This exhibition delves into the interplay between creation and curiosity. It navigates themes bridging civilization and contemporary art, material and craft, and life’s essence with its representations. The show invites audiences to reflect on the artistic process and its connection to the wonder of human existence.

The Bird That Sings Within: Textile Exhibition by Ajit Kumar Das

Dates: January 10– February 28, 2025

Location: Emami Art, KCC, Kolkata

Overview: Featuring hand-painted natural dye fabric works, this exhibition showcases Ajit Kumar Das’s fifty-year journey in textile art. Centered around the theme of nature, the exhibition speaks of the relevance of beauty in today's prosaic worlds, artistic craftsmanship and ecological ethics.

Sculpting Air, Curated by Sumesh Sharma

Dates: January 11– February 28, 2025
Location: Space 118 Art Foundation, Mumbai
Overview: This third edition from Mumbai-based art patron Saloni Doshi’s collection introduces a selection of sculptures to the public for the first time. Rooted in historical traditions yet unmistakably contemporary, the exhibition explores our spatial relationships—spaces occupied and left behind. The sculptures play with light, shadow, texture, and form. Through these works, Doshi invites visitors to reflect on perception and the unseen forces—time, memory, and thought—that shape our understanding of space.

Dots Lines Checks by KAASH

Dates: January 11 - March 08, 2025

Location: KAASH, Berlie Street, Langford Town, Bengaluru

Overview: Plastic, metal and leather have been reimagined and handcrafted into lighting, seating and artworks for KAASH’s first exhibition of 2025. It presents an exploration of design, craft and material through three distinct collections. Chettinad’s tape basket weaving comes to life in the checkered KASERA seating, framed by simple, structured forms. Untanned leather from Dharmavaram is transformed into luminous sculptures AKASHA and SURYA, showcasing Tholu Bommalata’s intricate perforations. Bidriware shines through the TARA galaxy-inspired patterns, TANMATRAS sensory wall sculptures, and a trio of flowing silver-embedded figures dubbed BOWIE.

Overview: Sarmaya opens 2025 with its fourth exhibition, hosted for the first time at its archive in Fort. The show delves into historical and artistic voyages while tracing Sarmaya’s own journey from its inception in Delhi to becoming a museum in Mumbai. Accompanied by an engaging calendar of events, the exhibition invites audiences to explore and connect more deeply with its themes.

Baro Market Pop-Up

Dates: January 17– January 19, 2025
Location: Civil Lines, Jacob Road, Jaipur
Overview: A curated pop-up event showcasing artisanal crafts, design objects, and decor pieces, bringing Baro’s signature aesthetic to Jaipur’s discerning audience.

Location: Urmila Art Gallery, Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad

Overview: The show will feature a curated selection of original, certified works of contemporary and folk art, priced between Rs 2000 and Rs 3 lakhs.

Kala Ghoda Arts Festival

Dates: January 25 – February 2, 2025
Location: Mumbai
Overview: Marking its 25th year, Asia’s largest multidisciplinary street arts festival returns with the theme "Silver." The festival features over 300 programs across 15 verticals, including visual arts, literature, music, and workshops. Spanning multiple venues, it transforms the precinct into a dynamic cultural hub.

Flower of Fire by Gopal Ghose

Location: The Alipore Museum, Kolkata
