Oïna, the newest light collection from the White Teak Company by Asian Paints, explores circular geometry, the dynamics of movement and the principle of balance and harmony
The collaboration between the White Teak Company by Asian Paints and Switzerland-based atelier oï was first announced at ID Mumbai last year, with the sculptural Anisora light collection. In February, the New Delhi chapter of the design fair saw yet another outcome from the association—Oïna.
This collection of lights revolves around the idea of circularity. Central to the shape is what the creators call “the timeless intelligence of sacred geometry”. The design explores and highlights the symbolism associated with the circular form. It is rooted in the universal principle of balance and flow; the circle creates an endless loop, where the beginning and end transform into the idea of continuity.
In Oïna, this takes the form of slender spirals made from metal and glass. They intersect and overlap across multiple levels, with the final result almost structural in its form. The rhythmic movement unfolds through these repeating, rotating spirals. This cyclical flow conveys the fluidity inherent in nature, from celestial systems to organic growth.
Experimentation, inspiration and a thoughtful creative process come together in these lights by a studio known for its material explorations.
Materials become the medium to leverage traditional artisanal practices and reinvent them in a modern context. In the case of Oïna, light too serves as material, with its creators giving it shape and direction. Rather than simply radiating outwards to illuminate spaces, the light circulates, “creating a living glow that breathes with its environment”. Inspired by the idea of harmony, Oïna is both calm and vivid, still and in perpetual motion, building an illusion of movement. The range includes pendant lights, table lamps and wall lights.
This collection aligns with atelier’s design outlook, which is embedded in building an emotional connection between object, nature and the individual. Founders Aurel Aebi, Armand Louis and Patrick Reymond, emphasise a transdisciplinary approach, going beyond design disciplines to get to the heart of creation.
As a follow-up to Anisora, the Oïna collection of lights continues to dissolve boundaries between artistry, materiality, form and function.
