Shilpi and Sunil Dhingra of SD Inc. give us their insights into this palatial farmhouse which features sanitaryware, lights, paint and wallpaper from the house of Asian Paints
Amidst New Delhi's lush landscapes, Shilpi and Sunil Dhingra, Founders of SD Inc. design a farmhouse that stands as a testament to opulent living, harmoniously blended with nature's grandeur. A sprawling estate stretching as far as the eye can see, envelops this luxurious home that comes with the promise of a resort-style experience. A step inside it, and the city's hustle bustle fades into the background, leaving you with a sense of being in a retreat.
Located on a two-acre site, this 7000 sq ft house in Vatika Farms Sohna, Gurugram, the Aravali Hills Farmhouse exudes an aura of timeless sophistication. While a striking pitched roof harks back to classic British cottage charm, modern amenities ensure a lifestyle that is comfortable and seamless. We spoke to the designers to understand how a symphony of materials, both natural and man-made, harmonise to create this ambience that is as beautiful as it is inviting. Edited excerpts from an interview:
Shilpi: The owners wished to have a luxurious second home with resort-style living. The couple with their two teenage boys and parents wanted a main dwelling unit with three to four bedrooms set up with a separate bar for the family. Apart from that, they wanted a studio cum office away from the main residential unit, a servant quarter block and a temple along with ancillary service areas.
Shilpi: The design brief given to us was of a British cottage type look with all modern amenities. The process of creating the desired form was time consuming and after a lot of preliminary sketches, internal discussions and drawings, we designed this farm as a fusion of both styles. We used a textured paint surface for the exterior in combination with a stone coated metal roof to give it the desired aesthetic. We also used similar styles in the interiors so that the theme is unified.
Sunil: Every artwork, be it painting, statue or wall décor was personally handpicked by the team of interior designers led by Shilpi Dhingra. The paintings were chosen and customised to our desired scale and proportions to match the theme and design guidelines of each area. All paintings narrate a story if you look at them carefully in a sequence.
Sunil: I had a good experience working with the Asian paints team. They helped throughout the project from procurement to delivery to after sales. The quality of their products and service is excellent.
Sunil: There are many such elements, but the stand-out feature is the scale and height once we see the elevation and the arrival experience in the double height area. The fusion of two different pitched roofs creates very interesting lines in the interior.
Shilpi: It was building elevations which were my area of interest particularly. Once the schematic design was done, the structural part to execute the slopes and the fusion of two different slopes was challenging. Not only from the execution point of view but from the visualisation point also since we had to virtually see the interiors of two slopes merging into each other and how they were affecting the look and feel. But we really liked this challenging task and are happy with the result.
