An elegant Mumbai flat

Designed and executed by the Beautiful Homes Service team, this airy apartment on the 22nd storey in suburban Mumbai has the lightest of touches

A apartment on the 22nd floor of a sky-grazing building, by default, has the advantage when it comes to expansive views, and being above all the chaos and noise that defines a city. Beautiful Homes Service designer Tinu Jose brought that same serene vibe into this house in Marol, Andheri as well, staying true to the homeowners’ requirement for a practical, soothing and clutter-free home. She speaks about creating a space that checks all the boxes of a contemporary space high on elegance.

Beautiful Homes (BH): What was your impression of the space when you saw it and did the client have a specific design in mind?

Tinu Jose (TJ): This was a beautiful, airy 2.5BHK apartment with an open-plan layout which was meant for a couple and their teenage son. They wanted bright and vibrant spaces with minimal fuss and clutter and easy maintenance. They were nice enough to let us take the reins on the design and only had set ideas about functionality. In contrast to the other clients we have in Mumbai, they weren’t so focused on having a lot of storage, but they wanted clean, functional spaces that would also look aesthetically pleasing.

BH: How did you see the design for the space coming together?

TJ: Siddharth Gujarathi, the design associate who worked on the project along with me, had the idea of colour-blocking certain rooms. Since we had a well-lit L-shaped hall and dining area, he suggested making the crockery-cum-display-unit the highlight of the dining space; that is what you see as soon as you enter the space. The second highlight was the minimal and elegant TV unit in the living space. Each of the bedrooms has a different colour story as well, and all accessories and elements were picked to match the theme.

BH: How closely does this space come to your design aesthetic?

TJ: Very close! As most of the design decisions were taken by both of us designers with very minimal intervention from the client. We have to say that these were dream clients to work with!

BH: How did the selection of materials and furniture happen? Were any innovations or interesting pieces introduced into the design?

TJ: The furniture was mainly store-bought, but most of the soft furnishings were from the Asian Paints range of fabrics. In terms of style, we stuck to the classics. However, the crockery-cum-display-unit in the dining area is a particular favourite. In fact, we are currently making two more iterations of this piece, as anyone who’s seen it has instantly fallen in love with it! I think Siddharth has done a splendid job on its design.

BH: How did the process work, from the first meeting and conceptualisation with the client until the handover?

TJ: This project went so smoothly from start to end. Within the first meeting the clients had with Siddharth and Namita (CES-A), they were sure they wanted to go ahead with us. The detailed design, scope and estimate were discussed and finalised within a record time by the team. We delivered the best output within the outlined budget—which was modest for the minimalist space—we had to work with and never went overboard.
