Start your magical spoon journey today and explore your creative side with your little one. Let the colorful and unique puppets inspire your kids’ imagination while they’re having fun. It’s a win-win!

LEVEL

Beginner to intermediate. Can be done with kids five years and over. Help younger kids with stitching.

MATERIALS

  • Wooden spoons
  • Acrylic paint & brushes
  • Lace or embroidery material
  • Needle & thread
  • Markers

We know how limited kids' attention spans can be, but their imagination is unlimited! Watch how Kochi-based designer Vanessa Meister Varma turns ordinary kitchen items into creative masterpieces - with beautiful puppets that will keep the little ones entertained and engaged throughout the activity. This is a perfect way for them to explore their creativity with materials that are colourful, unique, and full of possibilities.

STEPS

  1. Paint spoons and let dry
  2. Stitch embroideries
  3. Add patterns or face with paint or markers

METHOD

Start with a base coat of paint for your home interior design. You can choose to add colour only to certain parts and keep some areas of the spoon in the original wood. Get those little pieces of left-over tape out—it’s a great way to repurpose extra lace or embroidery material you might have at home as you only need small bits for this project. Play around with colours and textures while creating a narrative about each spoon if you are working on this with children. Add a face and an expression to complete the look. Display in a jar or let children use them as puppets for a little play if they can’t let go of them.
