If you have an old trunk lying around in the house, it’s time to transform it with a creative and fun DIY project! Follow along as Vanessa Meister Varma, a Kochi-based designer works her magic, turning an old and tired trunk into a vibrant work of art.

STEPS

  1. Add a base colour (optional)
  2. Make a tape pattern
  3. Spray the first colour and let it dry
  4. Spray the second colour and let it dry
  5. Remove the tape

METHOD

This spray paint DIY is a great way to upgrade vintage trunks and give them a more contemporary, edgy look. You can also get new metal trunks from your local market. You can add a coat of white acrylic or keep the metallic silver if you are sourcing a new trunk. From the thin masking tape cut strips and stick on the flat surfaces in a uniform way. By cutting the wider tape on an angle, you get diamond shapes which add interest to your design.

Once you have covered all sides, take your trunk outside and get ready to spray paint the first coat. Use protection for the floor, cover your mouth, nose and eyes for safety. Avoid exposing young children to the spray paint. Cover the bottom half with a shading towards the top for both colours to blend. Once dry, apply the second colour starting from the side and moving towards the top. Spray in a steady, uniform way around 30 cm away from the trunk for best result. If you use the spray sparingly you can paint two trunks with two spray cans. Let dry and remove the tape. Enjoy your custom new storage!
