Give your simple box a character of its own with Vanessa Meister Varma’s Treasure box DIY

Seeing those pretty jewellery boxes in the store, have your kids wished to have one with a bit more pizzazz? Get creative and turn that plain box into a colourful treasure box with this easy DIY for kids! All it takes is some imagination and a few craft materials to give your jewellery box a much-needed glitzy update by adding stripes or polka dots in whatever colours you like.

LEVEL

Intermediate according to painting skills. Can be done with kids five years and over.

MATERIALS

  • Wooden Box
  • Acrylic paint and Brushes
  • Markers

All children have their favourite toys or objects and often look for a place to keep their treasures hidden. Why not help them make their own safe-keeping boxes? These DIY treasure boxes will allow your child's imagination to run wild and keep them entertained. They can also make for great décor pieces in your child's room. Kochi-based designer Vanessa Meister Varma demonstrates a quick DIY to transform plain boxes into personalised and colourful souvenirs with basic materials like sandpaper, paint, and markers.

STEPS

  1. Draw your planned design in pencil
  2. Apply a paint base, let it dry and add another coat
  3. Decorate with markers or paint

METHOD

This DIY is a great way to customise plain jewellery or treasure boxes. Sketch your idea on paper first, use a pencil to mark it out on the box. Start with your base layer and let it dry. Take your child’s favourite animal or name or initials placing it on the center top, you can add a border and paint the edges to give structure to your design. I recommend using two or three colours and black and white for a nice, contrasted look. Add a second coat for colour saturation and a third to correct mistakes and do the finishing touches. Use markers for a clean finish and with smaller children if painting gets too messy. You can sign and date your design at the bottom of the box as a nice souvenir of the occasion. Lovely personalised gift for birthdays. Have fun with it!
