Upcycle an old wire mesh basket into a whimsical birdcage chandelier

  • Tips & Tricks
May 02, 2019

Use vacay time wisely and put together a custom pendant lamp that will delight you every time it catches your eye

An inspired lighting idea that’s a great conversation starter for your next summer party

Birdcage lampshades are easily one of the quirkier decor trends we’ve seen. They are eye-catching, playful and can be worked into almost any kind of design aesthetic easily. While you can purchase elaborate options online, upcycling an old wire mesh basket you likely found during a bout of Marie Kondo-inspired de-cluttering seems like a more Earth-friendly thing to do. It's also a great way to spend a creative afternoon indoors. Begin by scouting the neighbourhood for branches. If the wire bin you have needs some sprucing up, think about a quick coat of spray paint. Next step - source and select your feathery menagerie. Go all out with a Harry Potter themed owl and phoenix theme or stick with colourful bee-eaters, sunbirds, macaws and budgerigars - it's such a simple idea that virtually anything goes!

There are so many ways to incorporate this idea into your home, but, if you want to use it as more of an accent piece rather than actual lighting, swap out the light bulb for some copper fairy lights to give it a warm and festive final look. We hope we’ve given you enough information to get started with your own decor dreamscape.

Here’s what you’ll need:
-    Wire mesh basket
-    Glue dots
-    Light bulb
-    Electrical wire
-    Toy birds
-    Dry branches

4 steps to one-of-a-kind lighting:
1.    Turn the basket upside down and tie a knot with the electrical wire according to the length preferred
2.    Insert the bare branches through the mesh
3.    Stick the birds on the branches with glue dots
4.    Fix the bulb and suspend the lamp.

Your upcycled pendant lamp is ready!
