BH at Salone del Mobile 2019: 10 chairs of singular design that we loved

  • Ideas & Inspiration
May 16, 2019
the collection of 10 Ultra Cool singular chair designs

5 brands, 10 chairs—we pick out the best seats from Salone del Mobile 2019. Learn about the brands and their work as you pick your favourites

In this second feature from our Salone expedition, we focus on that significant furniture piece without which it’s impossible to do pretty much anything. The chairs here hit the highest notes of design and are vying for the throne of being the best seat in the house. Here’s the list of our favourites:

Kartell
Surprise and delight - this is a brief Kartell follows year after year when presenting their new collections at Milan. This year, their 70th anniversary made it even more special. Kartell created a fresh burst of energy by launching its brand-new floral and spring themed fabrics in a range of patterns. We love the summery feel and lightness of material in the Clap and Foliage collection created by Patricia Urquiola. You can use it as a dining chair, study desk chair or simply place it in the verandah and enjoy your morning cuppa. If adding a dash of colour to your seating is your forte, then choose from the sorbet shades in the Philippe Starck-designed A.I. range.

The ‘Shadowy’ chair by Tord Boonjte

The ‘Shadowy’ chair by Tord Boonjte. This sleek armchair has been created with woven threads normally used for fishing nets. The designs are original and the colours and patterns, vibrant and eye-catching. Perfect for soaking up the sun outdoors or curling up with a favourite book indoors. Price on request.

Moroso
Here is a brand that is trendy, inspiring and iconic. From the many wonderful styles that made their debut this year, we were wowed by the M’Afrique range of outdoor chairs. Launched in 2009, the collection celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. In keeping up with its tradition of attention-grabbing style, the ‘Shadowy’ armchair by Dutch designer Tord Boonjte, is an absolute delight. Another Moroso piece that had us excited was the Banjooli chair by designer Sebastien Herkner. Its curved design is inspired by the courtship dance of ostrich birds living in East Africa and borrows the brilliant colours of tropical birds. To continue this African inspiration is one more show-stopper - Imba, one of our favourites. The Imba collection, made in Dakar, has been designed by Federica Capitani and attempts to translate the warmth of handcrafted, unique artefacts into a collection that is at once comfortable and cool.

Cappellini

What caught our eye was the sleek and elegant ‘01’ chair designed by Shiro Kuramata. Simple, straight lines with lacquered iron tubes or polished chrome. Crisp, contemporary and very current. The other, equally impressive offering was the reincarnated ‘Newood’ relax lux chair by Alberto Brogliato and Federico Traverso of the design studio Brogliato Traverso, which was a redux of its previous avatar.

The ‘Newood’ relax lux chair by designers Alberto Brogliato and Federico Traverso

The ‘Newood’ relax lux chair by designers Alberto Brogliato and Federico Traverso of the design studio Brogliato Traverso, a successful style launched earlier, resurfaced in a brand-new avatar with a lighter design. Don’t be deceived by the fewer bars at the back. It promises comfort and style in equal measure.

The ‘Cordula’ armchair is a lesson in minimal design and maximum impact. Its sleek lines and light material make it a favourite for both indoor and outdoor use. Price on request.

Missoni Home

Missoni Home, an iconic brand which transcends fashion, decor and accessories, is known to display its unmistakable design language through creative installations, wonderful combination of print and pattern and a seamless amalgamation of colour and texture. This year, the brand showcased a composite collection of seating across sofas, armchairs, chaise lounges in breathtaking prints and hues. We found three fun models that can be a wonderful addition to your dining table, your kids’ room or even your home office space.

Visionnaire

A brand known for its opulent aesthetic and the ability to combine lavish design with exquisite workmanship, Visionnaire’s showcase at the fest was a winner, particularly its ‘Camden’ armchair, a perfect example of luxury and style. As always, the brand left us impressed.

From their anniversary collection, the ‘Camden’ armchair’s rich colour, unique shape and lush material make it a must-have in your home. The outer shell, taut and round, is supported by a solid pore-wood frame that fits perfectly into the back portion of the leather-covered shell. Perfect for the living room, study or the dining area. Price on request.

The ‘Banjooli’ chair by Sebastien Harkner
The ‘Banjooli’ chair by Sebastien Harkner for the M’Afrique collection. The action of flapping wings has inspired the overhanging shapes which have been transferred to the silhouette of this armchair. We love the vibrant hues. Add a touch of quirk to your seating at home or place them by the pool in your holiday home. Price on request.
The Imba collection by Federica Capitani for Moroso

The ‘Miss Neuss’ chair 601 by Missoni Home
The ‘Miss Neuss’ chair 601 by Missoni Home has a steel frame and is covered with fabric and polyester fibre. Price on request.
The ‘Daniela’ armchair
The ‘Daniela’ armchair spells relaxation, comfort and reminds us of a typical granny chair. Sturdy and elegant at the same time, the chair is made of beech wood brushed with oak veneer. We love the hand-me-down feel of the chair. Use it as an anchor piece in a minimalist setting or place it in a cosy corner in your bedroom. Price on request.
