We asked entrepreneur and design lover Shilpa Sharma to share her recommendations of gifts for the home décor loving mom
If you are still struggling to think of an ideal present for your mom this year, we have you covered. We spoke with entrepreneur Shilpa Sharma, Founder of Breakaway, a boutique travel company, and co-founder of Jaypore, an online retail portal for exquisite products made by Indian artisans, for her recommendations. Shilpa is also the co-Founder of Mustard, a restaurant in Goa and Mumbai offering Bengali and French cuisine, and a mentor to Flourish, which envisions making ‘conscious consumption’ an accessible lifestyle choice for consumers. Sharma travels off the beaten path and supports small Indian businesses that make artisanal products. Here are her top recommendations for the best Mother’s Day gifts for the home interiors-loving mom.
From stunning cushions and bed linen to magnificent home decor pieces and serveware, this curated gift list has everything your mum will cherish.
Founded by Bashobi Tewari, a graphic designer from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, GreenEarth sells aesthetically pleasing, handwoven home decor products such as placemats, table runners, floor mats, and cushions inspired by Indian interior design. The products feature eye-catching patterns in dramatic hues. The brand aims to support village-based artisans by retailing products that marry traditional skills with modern designs. Their elegant pieces are crafted using eco-friendly fibres, and all the dyes, varnishes, and adhesives used are biodegradable. “I highly recommend the GreenEarth by Bashobi Tewari’s handmade, handwoven natural fibre chattais, table mats, and runners… and most importantly, their customisable window blinds in the most vibrant colours,” mentions Shilpa Sharma.
Ahmedabad-based One ‘O’ Eight Knots is a social enterprise that strives to empower women artisans by giving them a platform. Their visually arresting offerings include fashion and home accessories such as cushions, table runners and mats, candle jars, planters, festive decorations, and totes. Featuring distinctive designs crafted using age-old methods and natural materials, these make for excellent Mother’s Day gifts. For a home interiors lover, there are choices galore. “One ‘O’ Eight Knots offers handmade macrame (hand-knotted cotton) cushions and runners, which I absolutely love in their turmeric yellow, deep blue, off-white, and terracotta red colours. In addition, the brand’s products are also environmentally sustainable,” adds Shilpa Sharma.
Launched by Srila Chatterjee, Baro Market is well-known for its fashion and home decor products, and artworks with a refined aesthetic. What makes their collections unique is the fact that they are hand-crafted in small batches. Baro Market retails a selection of finely curated home accessories from homegrown brands, including Russell Street Anokhi, one of Kolkata’s best-kept secrets. Anokhi has been screen printing linen and cotton upholstery in a range of patterns for over five decades offering exquisite choices for house design enthusiasts. Baro Market's collections are great gifts for those redecorating their homes or pondering the idea. “Russell Street Anokhi on Baro Market retails very nice upholstery and curtain fabrics in contemporary geometric prints. Additionally, several other products on Baro Market are lovely, including their Sholapith flowers and wall art,” adds Shilpa Sharma.
If your mom has a preference for charming soft furnishings, Pinjore India has an array of products for her. The brand is a luxury lifestyle studio that focuses on culture, creativity, and craftsmanship. Its collection of home furnishing and lifestyle products is inspired by the vibrancy of India. The home collection comprises hand-block printed bed and table linen, cushions, and blankets. These soft furnishings are ideal for those who love heritage crafts and classic design. They showcase floral patterns and India-inspired motifs in striking colours. “Pinjore India cuts through the clutter when we look at timeless classic hand-block prints, which are an important part of who I am as I love all things craft. I love their towels and bed linen, including the dohars and quilted bedcovers,” remarks Shilpa.
Established by Geetanjali Kasliwal and Ayush Kasliwal, AnanTaya is a Jaipur-based multidisciplinary design studio deeply inspired and committed to preserving India’s crafts and house interior design. The design aesthetic of the brand’s products is elegant while being distinctly Indian. AnanTaya’s extensive offerings include tableware, lighting fixtures, decor accessories, furniture, and soft furnishings. Its vases, mirrors, lamps, and serve ware are very popular. The well-curated products make the perfect picks for an aesthete. “The Anantaya team is one of the earliest to contemporise traditional craft forms. I have always loved Ayush Kasliwal’s ability to give a traditional twist to home decor products and furnishings. I am a big fan of their work with lighting, glass, and even stone,” states Shilpa Sharma.
Handmade and sustainable design is the trademark of Kamala Store. This lifestyle platform pays homage to the diverse art forms in the country and the artisans who play a significant role in preserving these indigenous traditions. Kamala Store supports India’s rural economy and is for the environmentally conscious consumer who appreciates craft, sustainability, and tradition. It offers eclectic serve ware, tribal art, traditional paintings, and hand-painted vases and sculptures. Kamala Store also retails bedspreads and tablecloths made using applique, block prints, ikkats, and other beautiful weaves. “Kamala Store’s wooden trays are just fabulous. They make great Mother’s Day gifts!” concludes Shilpa Sharma.
