India’s vastly different topography and historical influences often result in design interventions that tell us the story of that region. Be it using mud to build homes, reclaimed wood to build a cabin in the mountains, or restoring a historic colonial-era bungalow—the choices are plenty. With the rise in the demand for staycations, several homeowners welcome guests to rent out their properties that they have thoughtfully created over the years. Casa Dona Flaviana, Goa
A 120-year-old Goan-Portuguese villa in Goa’s Assagao, this heritage property has been painstakingly restored by local craftsmen and heritage experts deeply familiar with Portuguese-era architecture. The expansive space is layered in contemporary comforts without compromising on its old-world charm. Its original features such as grand wooden doors, ‘balcao’ columns, high ceilings, and stained-glass windows have been preserved to protect the architectural soul of the home. Calamondinn Bungalow, Coorg
A five-bedroom heritage bungalow surrounded by coffee plantations, this home was originally built in the 1890s by Charles Edmund Waring. A hunter and farmer by profession, Waring built the home to enjoy the beauty of Coorg while farming on the neighbouring land. Interestingly, the current homeowner acquired it from Waring’s grandchildren and painstakingly restored it to keep its old-world charm alive. Its colonial, Victorian rococo, and Lutyen influences can be seen in the décor and furniture, and has several antiques that pay homage to its original owner. Wooden-framed mirrors, ornate chandeliers, a gramophone, grandfather clock, and more are peppered around the home. Here, this 100-year-old Goan-Portuguese home has been meticulously restored and redesigned by its owner Amrita Batra. Belonging to his grandparents, the Jaipur home is more of a living gallery, blending maximalist Indian aesthetics with contemporary functionality. Every piece, from 16th-century miniatures and pichhwais to zardozi chandowas and bronze sculptures, has been carefully curated to tell a story, celebrating craftsmanship, memory, and cultural continuity. The Holland House, Nashik
A French chateau-style luxury mansion, this five-bedroom villa spans over 2.5 acres welcoming guests with vineyards, kitchen garden, and lawns. The surrounding greens and hills create a picturesque setting that can be admired from the heated pool and outdoor area with a gazebo. Conceptualised by the owner Sonal Holland, a certified wine educator, the home offers wine tastings and curated pairings by a sommelier, on request. The décor too, features wine-inspired nuances through its wallpapers, curios, books, and bedrooms that are designed after different elements of winemaking. Conceptualised by architect Udayan Bhatt, founder of Architectural Corner, it brings his philosophy of ‘building with nature’ to life, shaping a space that breathes and blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Rooted in biophilic principles, the facades are softened with green terraces while floor-to-ceiling windows invite abundant natural light and uninterrupted views of layered greenscapes. The use of local materials and earthy textures ground the structure in its natural setting, and pathways create fluid transitions between the units. SUPER LUXURY HOMES
ARQ at Pichola, Udaipur
Nestled on the shores of Lake Pichola, ARQ is a collection of ultra-luxury villas by The Leela group. Designed by Viraj Patki of PG Patki Architects, it combines Indian artistry with timeless sophistication and contemporary opulence. Housed as a discreet haven within The Leela Palace Udaipur, the vision was to create a palace within a palace, weaving Indian craftsmanship into the fabric of the experience.
