Creating a dramatic space for at-home entertainment

Guru Randhawa’s room for entertaining guests

Singer-songwriter Guru Randhawa loves colour and quirk as much as he loves music; it only made sense then, to recreate a space with a dramatic presence

There’s bright, and then there is saturated, dramatic, maximal—a space that doesn’t shy away from making its presence known. As singer-songwriter Guru Randhawa’s house showed in an Asian Paints Where the Heart Is episode, he lives like he makes music—bold, brassy and no-holds-barred. And in a post-pandemic world where cherishing every moment is a pretty good idea, a space in your home for entertaining guests should help you do just that. For the design team at Beautiful Homes Service, this room in Randhawa’s house was brimming over with ideas.

The Inspiration

The plan was simple: make the most of everything, embrace a maximalist aesthetic, and make a statement with bold and dramatic curios, accessories, colours and furniture pieces. A notable element of Randhawa’s home was the plethora of metallic and glass accents used all over. The busyness, the bright art on the bright wall and the shelves choc-a-bloc with souvenirs and mementoes played a part in giving the design team their cues.

There’s colour, and then there’s bright, unapologetically loud colour. Saturated, dramatic, maximal—a space that doesn’t shy away from making its presence known. As singer-songwriter Guru Randhawa’s house is shown in the Asian Paints Where the Heart Is episode, where he lives like he makes music—bold, brassy and no-holds-barred. And in a post-pandemic world where celebrating every moment is a pretty good idea, a space in your home for entertaining guests should do just that, send out a loud and clear message of celebration. For the design team at Beautiful Homes Service, this room in Randhawa’s house was brimming over with ideas.

The Visualisation

The 3D visualiser got a lot to work with, and it didn’t disappoint. The punch-in-the-gut colour, the high-on-drama prints, the maximalist furniture and metallic curios all around—the designers had decided what they wanted and went for it.

The Render

The design team opted for furniture pieces that used metal and glass as materials as well as a striking bluish-purple pair of armchairs that offset a large grey sofa. Since this room was all about entertaining, a large-sized TV was a significant addition. One change that was made was going for dark-hued grey walls instead of lighter-coloured ones with the TV set against a grey wall to ensure greater contrast for the visual content. A fourth wall against which the sofa was placed was painted a brilliant orange and block prints were picked out to adorn the wall.
The Final Outcome

The real-world execution stayed faithful to the inspiration, with colour and drama the locus around which the design revolved. Dark shades offset the bold splashes, so a long grey sofa was paired with the bluish-purple armchairs and other metallic pieces. The saturated orange tone for the wall brought out the colours of the sofa and chairs and the prints added another layer of drama to the room. Music records hung on a wall worked well with the theme of the space and metal accents came through in the floor lamp, curios on shelves and the console. All of it was anchored in a brightly patterned, colourful rug that helped weave together the theme, the mood and the function of the place.
