Sanjay Puri Architects’ office space in South Mumbai combines a neutral palette with exposed concrete walls
The office of Sanjay Puri Architects in South Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi area is a three level structure that has been made by converting an existing 40 year old factory shed. The original pitched roof of the factory shed has been retained.
The external walls with small windows were stripped away, to give way to floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking large trees. These provide ample natural light indoors.
Inside, a neutral material palette was used that included exposed concrete walls, a polished concrete floor, raw sound insulation boards and cement boards. This is punctuated with elements of color & graphics that break the monotony of the material palette.
On the ground floor, the reception area has been designed out of a sunken seating space made of concrete. The first floor ceiling is made of corrugated steel and is supported by suspended wooden trays at different heights and angular exposed air conditioning ducts. Suspended trays in wood create indirect lighting on the first floor while suspended linear light fixtures constitute the lighting on the 2nd floor. The work areas are designed with an open-office theme in mind, with large multifunctional discussion tables that double as storage spaces.
