Candlestands, utilitarian objects of endless design potential, are at the centre of ‘A Gathering of Light’, a new exhibition at Nilaya Anthology in Mumbai
While largely functional, candlestands also happen to be popular as home decor objects. Now, further highlighting their potential as a versatile design object is ‘A Gathering of Light’ exhibition at Nilaya Anthology. The intent is to raise its profile from simply utilitarian to that of a modern collectable—even an heirloom.
The exhibition showcases the work of 23 established and emerging names. Participating designers and artists include Misimi Studio by Harsha Durugadda, Claymen, The Back Studio, Priyanka Shah of Studio Lalala, Nongothung Ezung, Craft Boat, Aditi Kedia, Nandini Chandavarkar, among others. Made specifically for this show, their one-of-a-kind collectables are outcomes of innovations in material, craft and form. And each one reflects the design philosophy of its creator.
The designs range from the whimsical to nature-inspired to metallic and sculptural. While Kedia’s piece, Dhārā, is a slim, curved volume in metal, marble and semi-precious stones, Claymen’s The Motion Tribe adds a human face to the candlestand. Banana blossom shapes inspire Pooja Chamudiya’s Orchard of Opulence, and stacked terracotta diyas find singular expression in Priyanka Shah’s Afterglow. Chandavarkar’s creation, Your Perfect Tits, investigates the fragmented female body in a patriarchal society. And Nolwa Studio’s metallic and minimalist Essence is an experiment in the concept of continuity.
Curated by Tanish Malji and Maithili Goradia, part of Nilaya Anthology’s creative team, the exhibition is another addition to the design hub’s swiftly expanding oeuvre. “The lighting of a lamp in our culture signifies so much—hope, renewal, faith and festivity. At this time, throughout India, we use light as an expression of joy. It gives me the greatest pleasure to be able to bring this to Anthology this season,” says creative director Pavitra Rajaram. The show is on at Gallery 2, which has previously hosted Vikram Goyal’s sculptural brass creations.
‘A Gathering of Light’ is on at Gallery 2, Nilaya Anthology, Mumbai, from September 27 to October 30, 2025.
