When interior designer Shonali Mahajan temporarily relocated for a year and a half, she was hesitant to buy brand new furniture. “The space I had moved into was really large for a Mumbai apartment,” she explains. Shonali’s dilemma was a curious one—she knew she needed to occupy the volume of the apartment with large pieces of furniture, to make sure it didn’t look too plain or empty—but she also knew that chances were, those same pieces would be far too large to fit into any apartment she subsequently moved into. So, she turned to Furlenco to rent an L-shaped sofa, two cupboards and a television set. “It made sense for me to rent furniture, rather than buy, because I wouldn’t have been able to do anything with it later.”
According to Manish Sugandhi, one of the co-founders of GrabOnRent, renting furniture is not at all a new concept—but the nature of the business has certainly changed. “There were a few big offline players in the market, and their major clientele comprised expats and army families.” Now, however, with more young people moving out of their family homes, or relocating to new cities on a short-term basis for college or work, the furniture rental market has opened up to a greater demographic.
You may find that renting furniture is a good option for you if you don’t plan on living in one place for too long—or if you don’t have the budget to invest in a more expensive “forever” piece yet. Additionally, it may be a better choice to rent rather than buy pieces that are intended for short-term use, like baby cribs or high-chairs, or fitness equipment you’d like to try out but—if you’re being completely honest with yourself--you’re not sure you’re going to get much use out of. In any of these cases, an online furniture rental portal can be your one-stop shop for all home furnishing solutions.
For Manish and his GrabOnRent co-founder Shubham Jain and Aditya Sharma, it’s all about creating a seamless user experience. “We look at ourselves as a lifestyle brand,” Manish explains. “Today, we offer five categories: furniture, home appliances, IT equipment, fitness equipment and office furnishings.” Speaking purely in terms of cost, it is important to consider that you could technically spend the same amount of money in EMIs to eventually buy a piece of furniture. However, Navankur Pathak, a lawyer who moved to Mumbai for work, considers the liability of owning furniture to be a far higher long-term cost. “I am not sure whether I am going to stay at this place for more than one year or even six months,” says Navankur, who rented two cupboards from Rentmacha, and a side table, study table and bed from Rentomojo. “If I have to carry these pieces everywhere I go, it will be a task for me--physically, mentally and financially. The main reason I rented furniture was so that, when I move, I can just send it back.”
Renting furniture is as easy as choosing the pieces you’d like, signing up online and providing a few KYC documents for security. Most furniture rental services even offer free drop off, assembly and pick up, so all you need to do is tell the team where to place it. If you’ve found that renting furniture is a good choice for you, the range available on furniture rental platforms will leave you spoilt for choice:
