Interior designer Pavitra Rajaram’s apartment offers memorable lessons in building visual narratives out of a rich combination of colour, texture, material and art
Few designers can intuit connections between colour, craft, textiles and design, and shape them into visual stories. Pavitra Rajaram has made it her hallmark. The creative director of Pavitra Rajaram Design and design director at Asian Paints, she has a knack for telling stories through her spaces. Her own apartment in Mumbai’s Worli is a testament to a very elaborate narrative—an outpouring of the outsized personalities and preferences of its residents. That’s probably nothing new. We all know that the best homes express the personality of its inhabitants.
But Rajaram’s home offers a unique framework that’s appealing, eye-catching and entirely uncommon. Most of all, it is an inspiring moodboard that creatively combines unpredictable elements to dial up your home design. Here’s a quick roundup of interesting takeaways from an unusual space:
Rajaram doesn’t hold back from experiments in bold shades to add drama. If you love bright colours, then let that show in your space. Even contemporary homes with a neutral canvas can carry a multitude of hues if they are used cleverly. In Rajaram’s home, the colours come through in the upholstery, the myriad artworks, wallpapers and accessories. Don’t let a compact space deter you from working with vibrant hues. Just use it in smaller doses and unexpected places—like a really dramatic painting, an accent wall or a statement chair.
A striking antique-looking Pierre Frey wallpaper that spreads across a wall is an unmistakable eye-catcher in Rajaram’s living room. What makes it even more of a stand-out are the layers of accessories and décor elements around it: the slate-grey bookcase, the large equine sculpture and the bright living room mise-en-scène in front of the sculpture—not to mention the vintage-looking chandelier hanging over it all.
Layering is the key to a character-filled home. Rajaram did it with an unrestrained yet careful hand; you too can make a play for it with some thoughtful planning. Use artwork, furniture and décor accessories to create an engaging visual palette that adds depth to your interior design story.
While it may not exactly qualify as your textbook-neutral shade, the colour blue certainly adds something wonderfully tranquil to homes. Blue has timeless appeal and works in almost any way you choose to use it. Rajaram used it sparingly to offset the explosion of colours and textures in her home. A turquoise blue vase on a side table, a bright blue wallpaper behind an open shelving unit, blue in artworks, blue as a bedspread and a bit of blue in curtains. Find a way to add some shade of blue into your space. It’s a great way to cool down a bright house, or warm up a neutral space.
The easiest way to rescue contemporary-style spaces from being too impersonal is by adding a touch of tradition. Family heirlooms come in handy. Antique accessories or brassware, ethnic prints and patterns, sculptures, and even the right kind of light fixtures and chandeliers are go-to options. Rajaram used them all, and then some more, in her space. Wooden furniture with curved edges or some ornamentation is yet another quick and easy way.
There is the regular ways of using fabrics for soft furnishings—and then there is the Rajaram way of leveraging textiles around homes. It isn’t often that you see a silk men’s shawl from Nigeria used to great effect as a table runner. Or an accumulation of diverse rugs and carpets sharing space, silks and leather, patterns and abstract prints, even artisanal fabric as upholstery dressing up a home. Rajaram’s love for textiles is undeniable but her home does more than just showcase that. it also serves as a template to use fabrics creatively to dress up interiors. Get creative while choosing your sofa and chair upholstery, debating on the use of a carpet, or selecting just the right fabrics and patterns for your curtains. Think about the style you want, experiment with the material, and perhaps even choose a fabric for your wall to add something more to your space.
Well-designed spaces have certain must-haves: a clear, defined style, coherent language, character and a visual story. But most of all, every home is an expression of your memories, your experiences and how you shape your world. This home that’s a homage to art, history, craft, textiles and vivid personalities shows you how.
