The house-bridge in Karjat, Maharashtra is shaped entirely by this ethos. It is a project that argues for a future where architecture is porous, responsive, and unafraid to get its hands dirty
In conversation with architect Vinu Daniel, one realises quickly that material is not a medium for him—it is an ethic, a temperament, a worldview. His work has grown in an India where cement has become shorthand for progress, speed, and modernity. But for Vinu, building begins elsewhere: in the intelligence of earth, the force-lines of labour, and the frictions that emerge when human ambition meets ecological limits. A future in which buildings learn the ground they stand on and assimilate over time, instead of dominating it. It is, in that sense, both ancient and futuristic—carrying forward a kind of imaginative stubbornness that refuses puritanism while staying acutely aware of ecological precarity.
The commission began in the most unremarkable way: the client needed a bridge. The site consisted of two parcels of land with a live stream between them—fed by monsoon runoff and industrial effluent upstream. A small functional crossing would have sufficed. But when Vinu first stood on the banks, positioned between two mature trees that framed the site, the idea of a simple solution felt insufficient.
As he explained, “One is not allowed to build private bridges, and while this could have been an exception, I figured—why not push that further and make it a house-bridge, a confluence?” It was not a provocation for its own sake. It was a continuation of his method: “pushing material and its limits a little further,” letting form become a negotiation between practicality and possibility.
The resulting structure is a continuous earthen shell stretched across the water in a single sweep. Bedrooms anchor each end; a long axial spine threads through the centre; jute partitions modulate privacy without cutting off air or sound. The house is both passage and dwelling—a place to inhabit the tension between two sides rather than collapse it.
Karjat’s climate is unforgiving in ways that reward sensitivity. Summers bite, humidity blooms, and the monsoon arrives as a season-long event rather than a passing spectacle. Instead of blocking or resisting these conditions, Vinu leaned into them through the materials themselves.
The building’s primary body is a clay shell cast over a bent-thatch formwork and reinforced with a web of tensioned steel wires. The clay breathes and regulates temperature; the thatch provides geometry; the wires take on whatever tensile demand the mud alone cannot. Nothing is hidden. Nothing is decorative. The system works because each material is placed exactly where it is most competent.
Vinu’s argument is clear-sighted: vernacular materials are not sentimental. They are efficient, contextual, and low-carbon. They have centuries of refinement behind them which could be misunderstood as folklore, but are actually an iterative science. In a country where climate is not an abstraction but an everyday force, this knowledge is profoundly contemporary.
A consistent thread across Vinu’s practice is the dismantling of hierarchy. “Hand and mind are always kept separate, as if that is biological reality,” he said. “It’s just social hierarchy limiting our humanity and potential.” His critique is directed not at individuals, but at a culture of practice where drawing and detailing are elevated, while the tacit, embodied intelligence of masons remains undervalued. A product of caste hierarchies ossified as scaffolding of Indian society.
He shared a story from early in his career: being dismissed in an academic setting because he referenced “site improvisations” and construction glitches. It was a moment that clarified for him how rigid architectural thinking can be—and how urgently it needs to be reconnected with the intelligence of labour.
On his sites, that intelligence is central. The building process—which stretched across four monsoons due to pauses in funding and ongoing recalibration—became an open laboratory. Designs were tested, altered, suspended, reworked. The masons did not simply follow drawings; they read the behaviour of clay under sun and rain, and they interpreted micro-shifts in weight or curvature long before software could model them.
Vinu’s studio, as he puts it, “has always been a moving theorem,” emerging wherever the work takes shape. This is why his team is often called “vagabond architects”: the real learning happens on site, in situ, through cycles of risk, failure, correction, and invention.
One of the most revealing stories he shared was about trust—the kind that forms when an architect and a mason have weathered enough experiments together.
He described moments on previous projects when a curvature or span seemed too ambitious. The theoretical numbers said it should fail. Yet a mason, having worked across many such shells, would say decisively, “It will hold.” Not as a guess, but as a certainty grounded in years of tacit knowledge. Over time, Vinu learned to read that confidence as embodied verification. It is this long, cumulative collaboration that made the Karjat shell possible.
In that sense, the bridge-house is built not just of clay, thatch, and steel, but of epistemologies that rarely make it into architectural drawings: the silence of waiting for a layer to dry; the eye that reads a crack as either cosmetic or structural; the instinct that knows when to add a wire and when to subtract weight.
Vinu’s advocacy for natural materials is often misunderstood as purism. But there is nothing conservative about the experiments he undertakes. Mud is pushed to span more. Thatch is persuaded into tighter curvature. Steel appears where it must, not as a crutch but as a collaborator.
The shell’s geometry—two interlinked hyperbolic surfaces—resolves forces through form rather than mass. Clay thickness responds to structural need; wires distribute tension; the thatch underbelly shapes and stabilises the curve. These innovations are the outcome of a site culture that accepts failure as data rather than embarrassment.
“Innovation isn’t about discovering new materials,” he said. “It’s about understanding the ones we already have—really understanding them.”
Walking through the house feels like inhabiting a line drawn through air. The floor warms slowly; the shell hums in rain; the partitions sway imperceptibly with movement. Light slips through the central skylight and hits the floor in elliptical patches that shift across the day. The stream below is an unbroken presence—visible, audible, and central to the spatial experience.
Nothing is fixed in an airtight way. Instead, the house rewards attunement. You feel its seasonal behaviour: the way humidity gathers, the way surfaces cool, the way air slips in from unexpected angles. Rather than sealing occupants off, the house makes them collaborators in climate.
“Completion is a misunderstanding,” Vinu told me. The bridge-house is designed not to last forever as an inert object, but to be repaired, adapted, and eventually returned to the earth without leaving a wound. Its joints are legible. Its materials are familiar. Its details can be worked upon by hands decades from now.
In a country where cement structures proliferate—quick to build, difficult to repair, destined to become demolition waste—this alternative is far from merely nostalgic. It is urgently futuristic: an architecture that leaves room for others, makes its dependencies visible, and remains humble enough to decay.
The Karjat house is not a monument. It is a proposition. A demonstration that Indian architecture can be ambitious without being extractive; experimental without being detached from context; and innovative without severing itself from the ecological and craft histories that make such innovation possible.
A house built on a bridge could have been a gimmick. Instead, it is a sculptural resistance—a structure shaped by land and labour, responsive to climate, alive to time, full of extravagant and whimsical design decisions, and unafraid of change. Most crucially, it stands as a question: What might our built future look like if we trusted material, craft, and place as radically as this?
