A unique platform that delves into the possibilities of the future of design, Asian Paints’ ‘Designing Tomorrow’ initiative had an eventful launch in Ahmedabad on May 24
Successful planning is, essentially, all about great timing. A potentially landmark occasion should always plan for a well-timed moment to make itself known. For a design-focused event, what could be more fitting than a launch around the World Interior Day on 27 May? Three days before that red-letter celebration, Asian Paints dove deeper into the world of interiors with yet another design-driven endeavour. The day marked the debut of ‘Designing Tomorrow’, powered by India Design, its new initiative meant exclusively for architects and interior designers (AIDs). Here, creativity, innovation and intelligence coalesced as experts contemplated how to design tomorrow’s India. The event touched upon a range of relevant topics—design trends, materiality, sustainability, and designing for tomorrow. The only platform of its kind, it has provided a thought-provoking, immersive design-fuelled experience for its invitees.
A series of chapters to be hosted across 10 Indian cities, the event kicked off in Ahmedabad on Friday, May 24. The theme of this inaugural edition centred on wood finishes and interior textures. These, incidentally, also inspired the setup of the venue at the Taj Skyline. The evening delivered on what it promised—an enriching smorgasbord of activities to engage an exclusive guest list.
The first leg of this by-invite-only event began with a ‘Moodboard Ideation Activity’. Six architects and interior designers created moodboards on-site. Their tools of choice? Assets and props provided by the Asian Paints team. These creations were an expression of their interpretation of the ‘Rustic Dreams: A Take on Sustainable Materials’ theme set out for moodboarding. Even as these six participants got busy, other guests enjoyed a walk-through of the space. Decked out with the Woodtech range of finishes and Royale Play interior textures and designer plasters, the setup showcased Asian Paints’ latest collections. It was elegant enough to even rival the big draw of the evening.
A much-vaunted panel discussion was the highlight of the evening. A major source of its lure for aspiring AIDs was the trio of leading Gujarat-based architects on the panel. Snehal Suthar of Grid Architects, Prashant Parmar of his eponymous firm, and Kunal Shah from his namesake firm shared the stage with Italian architect and interior designer Barbara Sansonetti from Beebest, and Enea Biraku, lead chemist, Renner India.
The overarching theme of wood finishes and interior textures drove the topic: ‘International Design Trends and Their Adaptation in the Indian Context’. The architects even offered insights and examples from their boutique projects to illustrate their point. Integral to the lively discussion was the necessity of using sustainable materials and key takeaways for today’s design milieu. A post-discussion guided walk about the venue was the perfect setup for freewheeling conversations among the attendees. A tasteful dinner and then it was curtains down on an illuminating evening.
The first-ever ‘Designing Tomorrow’ showcase has set the tone for many more such chapters to come. The next city to enjoy such one-of-a-kind design hospitality is Pune on 7 June. So, for architects or interior designers from that city, remember to save the date.
