From one-of-a-kind experiences to the most thoughtful objets, here’s how to make this Diwali extra special with these handpicked gifts for your loved ones
Diwali is a time for celebration, togetherness and, of course, gifting. While traditional sweets and décor are the usual go-to, for this year’s gifting game we’re looking at something more unique. From artisanal furniture and objects to unforgettable experiences, this guide has something to light up the hearts of all your loved ones.
STHIR DAY BED, Mana Collective
The Kathmandu Valley is renowned for its rich artisanal practices, and one craft that stands out here is wood carving. Even in the modern age of mechanics, this tradition—dating back to the 18th century—continues to thrive, with skilled craftsmen dedicating themselves to their craft for generations. Aditi Kedia and Harshitaa Agarwal reimagine these traditional crafts through a contemporary lens with Mana Collective “Traditional furniture struggles to find its place in contemporary homes, which made us look at indigenous crafts from a modern lens. After tons of research, we delve into the essence or meaning of each craft,” they explain, describing their collection Dhyan, inspired by the meditation of making. The Sthir Day Bed, crafted in American white ash and unbleached sheep wool, is a perfect reflection of this philosophy, inspired by the habit of siestas in the afternoon in the Kathmandu Valley.

Each hauntingly beautiful, often black-and-white photograph echoes her personal narratives or family history against landscapes and their topographies, wildlife or household vignettes. Her work has been featured in national and international publications, and in solo and group exhibitions across the country and the globe; and she is also part of Eight Thirty, a collective of nine women photographers based in different geographies across India.

KINTSUGI KIT
Kintsugi, the centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and powdered gold, celebrates beauty in imperfections. Rather than disguising cracks, Kintsugi highlights them, transforming broken pieces into something unique and more valuable than before. While the artform takes years to master, a kintsugi kit offers everything needed for an amateur to embrace this mindful practice at home. The kit includes lacquer, gold powder, brushes and bamboo mixing sticks, allowing the repairer to artfully mend any broken yet sentimental ceramic object. A thoughtful gift that encourages reflection and celebrates resilience.

REGENCY METAMORPHIC BAR, Pooranawalla
Open up the tabletop and out pops a fully stocked bar! This Regency-period mahogany metamorphic bar is completely fitted with crystal glass and barware. “Interestingly, these metamorphic bars were often found in the private offices of lawyers, where after weighted discussions with important clients, a little alcoholic beverage was offered to calm and relax any jittery nerves,” shares Jacinta Krishnamoorthy, founder of Pooranawalla. A treasure trove of heritage objets, furniture and art, her space is a time-travelling gem for any collector or culture vulture eager to discover more on period pieces and their history.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS, General Items
General Items—co-founded by Tiipoi’s Spandana Gopal and sourcing consultant Malini Malik—is a charming design store and an occasional gallery with a collection of thoughtfully selected homeware, décor and stationery, and community-driven experiences. The duo regularly host two kinds of workshops: ‘Meet the Maker’, where creators of the products showcased in the store (such as Mumbai-based ceramic artist Tosha Jagad) lead hands-on classes; and ‘Sundays at General Items’, which invites non-stocking creatives such as chefs and tablescape artists to demonstrate their craft, often weaving the store’s products into their work. These workshops are designed to cultivate a sense of community, where participants not only learn new skills but also connect with fellow attendees, creating an intimate and welcoming environment that extends beyond the store’s bright red doors.
An upcoming workshop will be held with Tara Kelton, a contemporary artist who works primarily in digital media and installation art, who will talk about her creative process and how she incorporates bookmaking in her practice.
Prices range between ₹300 to ₹1,000 ; contact the store via Instagram (@generalitems.in) for booking
