Nothing excites me more than new, shiny kitchen tools. To just rip-open the packaging and figure out how the item works. It took me a few attempts to figure this one out though. Especially, how to make the grinder go from fine powder to coarse powder…but for that and my verdict on this tool you can watch the full episode!

This was my first experience with IKEA’s kitchen tools. I used this Swedish grinder to make something supremely Indian: my homely chaat masala that needs frequent replenishment. We attempted a tulsi-cinnamon fruit salad sprinkled with tons of homemade spice mix and it was ideal because the grinder lets you make mixes in small batches that a blender won’t permit.

 

It’s compact, which makes it easy to store on your kitchen shelves, taking up as little space as possible compared to a mixer-grinder. For me, the most useful feature of the tool is the grinding mechanism, a ceramic fixture to ensure even and finely ground spices.

Recipe for Tulsi-Cinnamon Chaat:

 

INGREDIENTS
 

For Chaat masala:

  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp carom seeds
  • 1 tsp peppercorn
  • 1 tbsp dry mango powder
  • 1 small spoon of black salt
  • ¼ tsp of asafoetida
  • ¼ tsp ginger powder

 

For Tulsi-Cinnamon Chaat:

  • 1 cup apple, cubed
  • 1 cup pineapple, cubed
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 3 tbsp pomegranate gems
  • 1 tbsp tulsi, chopped
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 pinch chaat masala
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder

 


 

METHOD:
 

For chaat masala:

  1. Add cumin seeds, coriander seeds, carom seeds and peppercorn in a pan and roast them well.
  2. Once roasted, transfer them to the grinder and grind it.
  3. Further, add dry mango powder, black salt, asafoetida, and ginger powder to the grinder and grind again.

 

For the tulsi-cinnamon chaat:

  1.  In a bowl, mix all the fruits and pour lemon juice on top.
  2. Now add the chaat masala and cinnamon powder to coat the fruits well.
  3. Garnish with tulsi leaves and serve.
