Production designer Shruti Gupte styled a living room that presents a narrative in every nook and corner. Featuring furniture, upholstery and lights from the House of Asian Paints

The person who occupies this sort of a space nurtures memories and memorable tokens. They like to display those pieces around them, blending mementoes with practical accessories. With every new heart-warming encounter, they add layers to the room, till it becomes an interesting mix and match of past and present. There’s always balance, so that they never weigh too much to the side of becoming a hoarder. That is the persona that production designer Shruti Gupte had in mind when she created a space that married nostalgic pieces within a contemporary aesthetic.

The Colours

An unusual shade of yellow forms the base of the room. There is a tinge of peppiness while also creating a canvas of warmth. The colour palette as a whole has warmer shades dominating the look, while a subtle appearance of blue and green balances the setting. The main pieces of furniture have a mix, with shades of maroon being in focus. While the rug and single seaters have cooler shades. The cushions and throws also help in creating a space that doesn’t seem overwhelming to the eyes.

The Furniture
Furniture takes centre stage in the room, with the sofa sets, ottomans, a vintage Chinese cupboard, an iftar coffee table and a modern bookshelf. The entire sofa set from the House of Asian Paints forms the main structure of the room. The Chinese cupboard and the bookshelf create a strong mix of styles at two places against the same wall.

The Fabrics
The upholstery on the pieces of furniture add a rustic yet luxurious look to the space. Due to the shades and the velvet texture it has a certain royal old world charm to it. The cushions on the other hand have bright coloured prints breaking the monotony of the seating. The sheer curtains bring in ample sunlight throughout the day while the solid curtains arrange for privacy whenever needed. All of these belong to the Sabyasachi Mukherjee for Nilaya range.

The Accessories
The accessories Shruti has chosen for the space balance their modern counterparts, making sure there isn’t too much of the same type. The side tables for example have two distinct styles. The marble top side table marks a modern aesthetic, while the other tables in the room have a vintage look and feel. The art work too has a variety in style and range from contemporary to antique. The centre table is created using an antique Iftar plate over an interesting looking wooden base. All the details in the setting show layers added through time.
