In the studio of The Summerhouse

Bengaluru based The Summerhouse’s studio space echoes the brand’s minimalist approach to design

“Slow down, don’t move so fast. You’ve got to make the moment last…” That Simon & Garfunkel song plays in my head as I chat with the founders of The Summerhouse, the sustainable luxury homeware and clothes wear label that is all about slow design and taking the time to enjoy the good things in life.

Their Jayanagar studio in Bengaluru houses their tailoring unit, their personal work space and a fitting room along with a small retail space where customers can walk in and browse through their handcrafted pieces. Their brand of minimalism is echoed in the design of the studio. Surrounded by curtain-less windows on all sides, the ground floor space has ample natural light. While one end of the studio houses the tailoring section, where a group of full-time tailors measure, cut and sew pieces for the latest collection, the other end is where the two partners Shivangini Parihar and Rekha Datla sit. At that end of the studio, an old-fashioned but charming letter filing cabinet is stuffed with prints of the brand’s last photo shoot while a wire frame moodboard above it holds snippets of inspiration.

The brand is all about embracing the slow life, taking time to enjoy each moment and appreciating quality and craftsmanship. Their range of homeware extends from citrus juicers made on the potter’s wheel(a personal favourite!) to platters made from mango wood that have been sustainably sourced to simple, handwoven cotton towels. We picked a few of our favourite pieces from their Homeware collection.
